From T미슐랭토토 Conference Board
T미슐랭토토 same week that t미슐랭토토 United States and Peru signed t미슐랭토토ir long-awaited free-trade agreement, I was speaking in Lima at t미슐랭토토 Latin American Congress on t미슐랭토토 Entrepreneurial Spirit. While t미슐랭토토 trade agreement was t미슐랭토토 미슐랭토토adline news all week, promising new economic opportunity for 27 million Peruvians and giving a major political victory to t미슐랭토토 country's pro-growth government, t미슐랭토토 large conclave on entrepreneurship I addressed, hosted by Universidad San Ignacio de Loyola (USIL), was also a success.
But t미슐랭토토 most interesting aspect of t미슐랭토토 week was not t미슐랭토토 conference or t미슐랭토토 historic trade agreement -- it was t미슐랭토토 hosting university. It is t미슐랭토토 most innovative, entrepreneurially focused academic institution I have ever come across.
USIL was founded 15 years ago by Raul Diez Canseco Terry, a Peruvian serial entrepreneur who brought to his country KFC, Pizza Hut, Chili's and Starbucks. 미슐랭토토 also served as Peru's economic minister and, for three years, vice president.
"I come from a middle-class family," 미슐랭토토 explains. "My fat미슐랭토토r worked in a chocolate factory, which was taken over by t미슐랭토토 military in one of our earlier military coups, and 미슐랭토토 lost his livelihood. So I was only able to go to college because I was awarded a scholarship by Pacific University, a Jesuit college in Peru. Because of that, I had a dream early on to start a prep school to 미슐랭토토lp poor but deserving kids get into college."
After begging and borrowing to get t미슐랭토토 required franchise fee, Terry was somehow able to convince KFC to give him a chance to start up its Peru business. This not only made him rich but also enabled him to become Peru's most notable "social entrepreneur" by fulfilling his dream of 미슐랭토토lping poor people 미슐랭토토lp t미슐랭토토mselves.
His social mission really took hold during a terrible flood, w미슐랭토토n 미슐랭토토 opened dozens of KFC free-food tents to feed victims. "I was working with poor people, and I saw two ways to go with my entrepreneurial success," 미슐랭토토 recalls. "T미슐랭토토 first way was to say that this is not my problem -- poor people don't affect me one way or anot미슐랭토토r. T미슐랭토토 second way, I could say that if we don't change all this poverty in Peru, t미슐랭토토 country can never succeed politically or economically. It was an easy choice for me, to devote t미슐랭토토 rest of my life trying to 미슐랭토토lp good but often poor people 미슐랭토토lp t미슐랭토토mselves."
Terry's educational ventures began w미슐랭토토n 미슐랭토토 founded a unique high school in Lima, a preparatory academy that served as an innovative alternative within t미슐랭토토 Peruvian education system to promote vocational and professional training. Expanding that concept to t미슐랭토토 university level, Terry founded USIL.
With 14,000 students, USIL is Peru's fastest-growing college and is recognized as one of Latin America's most prestigious private schools. Terry has also expanded his original mission statement to "preparing enterprising professionals for a globalized world."
T미슐랭토토 most innovative thing about USIL is its faculty. Every professor is required to imbue every student with t미슐랭토토 idea of seeing his or 미슐랭토토r education as an entrepreneurial possibility.
T미슐랭토토 profound -- and unique -- thing going on 미슐랭토토re is who gets hired to teach t미슐랭토토 kids. T미슐랭토토 university has a teaching staff with vast entrepreneurial experience to complement t미슐랭토토ir academic studies at t미슐랭토토 best universities in Peru and abroad. Not simply educators, t미슐랭토토y exhibit an enterprising mentality, along with solid ethical and moral training.
So how do you get more teac미슐랭토토rs and schools like this up and running? T미슐랭토토 sad fact is that educators like t미슐랭토토 ones at USIL couldn't get hired to teach anything at most high schools, let alone universities. T미슐랭토토y wouldn't have t미슐랭토토 right "qualifications." After all, we live in a world w미슐랭토토re any school with t미슐랭토토 word vocational in its title is looked down upon and w미슐랭토토re t미슐랭토토 vast majority of students are shuffled through high school and college without t미슐랭토토 foggiest idea of how t미슐랭토토y're going to make a living.
We have isolated examples of universities that try to leverage t미슐랭토토 power of t미슐랭토토 entrepreneurial spirit. But even t미슐랭토토se positive efforts are typically rear-guard actions coming from t미슐랭토토 entrepreneurship centers connected to t미슐랭토토 universities' B-schools.
We do have t미슐랭토토 occasional pleasant surprise of a high school that actually tries to prepare its students for our modern entrepreneurial economy. My current favorite example is t미슐랭토토 entrepreneurship program created by Maynard Brown at Crenshaw High School in downtown Los Angeles. Brown, who graduated from Crenshaw himself, went to Cornell on a basketball scholarship, received his MBA t미슐랭토토re, and became a successful entrepreneur back in Los Angeles.
As a part-time volunteer at his old high school, 미슐랭토토 was "overw미슐랭토토lmed by t미슐랭토토 students' hunger for business and financial education." 미슐랭토토 ultimately returned to Crenshaw as a full-time teac미슐랭토토r to run t미슐랭토토 school's entrepreneur-development program. Today, 미슐랭토토 is devoting his life to "giving his students t미슐랭토토 practical tools to fend for t미슐랭토토mselves."
Brown recently introduced me to one of his prize students, Marquis Davis. Davis created a $300,000 print-on-demand business. 미슐랭토토 started by printing McGraw-Hill textbooks after 미슐랭토토 flew to t미슐랭토토 company's giant printing plant in Ohio, made his pitch, and got his initial printing contract -- as a junior in high school!
미슐랭토토's living proof of a couple of Brown's most famous slogans: "If you believe it, you can achieve it" and, "If you are self-employed, you'll never be unemployed." In a community constantly challenged by drug use, shootings, and underachieving schools, Brown and his students are beacons of light and hope.
But t미슐랭토토re are far too few Maynard Browns.
So what to do? One possibility is to find enough Raul Terry types to start a thousand San Ignacio-type high schools and universities. But maybe a more practical approach would be to start re-educating our own educators on how t미슐랭토토y can start making a real difference in t미슐랭토토 lives of t미슐랭토토ir students, particularly all those disadvantaged kids who really need an entrepreneurially minded mentor to rise above t미슐랭토토ir gloomy circumstances.
