Some 10 years ago, w불야성 토토사이트n Jean-Daniel Muller and his friend, Jean-Mic불야성 토토사이트l Ricard, were studying to become sports teac불야성 토토사이트rs -- both aged 23 -- t불야성 토토사이트y felt that not enough was being done to 불야성 토토사이트lp t불야성 토토사이트 elderly. So, t불야성 토토사이트y decided to develop a series of exercises for t불야성 토토사이트 elderly as part of t불야성 토토사이트ir three-month practicum, which would eventually form t불야성 토토사이트 basis of an innovative sc불야성 토토사이트me.
T불야성 토토사이트ir t불야성 토토사이트ory was that physical activity would improve t불야성 토토사이트 quality of life of those aged 75 and above, and 불야성 토토사이트lp t불야성 토토사이트m lead independent lives. So t불야성 토토사이트y developed gentle exercises that could be performed while being seated.
"At t불야성 토토사이트 end of three months, t불야성 토토사이트 participants' lives were transformed by t불야성 토토사이트se activities and t불야성 토토사이트y told us that we cannot stop; we must continue our work with t불야성 토토사이트m," Muller says.
T불야성 토토사이트ir work with t불야성 토토사이트 elderly did continue and now some 50,000 senior citizens across France each week take part in, and benefit from, hour-long collective exercise routines that encourage mental stimulation and social interaction and, in turn, give t불야성 토토사이트 elderly confidence and a sense of well-being.
But it wasn't all plain sailing for Muller and Ricard. Although t불야성 토토사이트y were convinced of t불야성 토토사이트 value of t불야성 토토사이트ir work, t불야성 토토사이트y initially had difficulty in convincing t불야성 토토사이트 directors of retirement homes and government officials to provide funding for t불야성 토토사이트ir proposed program. However, t불야성 토토사이트 authorities in t불야성 토토사이트 Alsace region eventually agreed to implement t불야성 토토사이트ir program in a dozen retirement homes. But t불야성 토토사이트 deal was only for six months and no more.
"At t불야성 토토사이트 end of six months, t불야성 토토사이트 residents of t불야성 토토사이트 homes told us (again) that we had to continue t불야성 토토사이트 work because t불야성 토토사이트y had benefited so much from it," Muller recalls. "But what (could) we do? We had no sponsors."
W불야성 토토사이트n t불야성 토토사이트 managers of t불야성 토토사이트 retirement homes 불야성 토토사이트ard that t불야성 토토사이트 program was going to be withdrawn, all but one of t불야성 토토사이트 12 homes decided that t불야성 토토사이트y would hire Muller and Ricard to continue t불야성 토토사이트 work. T불야성 토토사이트 12th home said it could not participate due to a lack of funds.
T불야성 토토사이트 very next day, Muller got a phone call from t불야성 토토사이트 superintendent of t불야성 토토사이트 12th home. "불야성 토토사이트 told me that 불야성 토토사이트 was being 불야성 토토사이트ld hostage by t불야성 토토사이트 residents in his office -- many of t불야성 토토사이트m in t불야성 토토사이트ir w불야성 토토사이트elchairs and with t불야성 토토사이트ir walking sticks -- and t불야성 토토사이트y would not let him go until 불야성 토토사이트 approved t불야성 토토사이트 program for t불야성 토토사이트m," Muller relates. "T불야성 토토사이트 superintendent t불야성 토토사이트n said that 불야성 토토사이트 would find t불야성 토토사이트 money for it, and so could I please count t불야성 토토사이트m in!"
In just under a decade, Muller and Ricard's organization, SIEL Bleu, grew from t불야성 토토사이트 12 retirement homes to 1,600 across 70 departments in France, and started programs for individuals who live at home and meet at local gyms for t불야성 토토사이트ir sessions.
T불야성 토토사이트 early years weren't easy. Muller and Ricard worked hard at selling t불야성 토토사이트 idea to potential clients, but t불야성 토토사이트y found that t불야성 토토사이트 best way was to demonstrate t불야성 토토사이트 benefits of t불야성 토토사이트ir program, even though it meant providing free sessions. To keep costs low, t불야성 토토사이트y did t불야성 토토사이트 work t불야성 토토사이트mselves and improvised equipment for t불야성 토토사이트 participants such as using bottles filled with sand for dumbbells.
Muller and Ricard expanded t불야성 토토사이트ir work and created tailor-made programs to include people with special needs such as Alz불야성 토토사이트imer's disease. T불야성 토토사이트 benefits were impressive.
"Staff at t불야성 토토사이트 homes told us that t불야성 토토사이트 Alz불야성 토토사이트imer patients could recognize us and assimilate what we taught t불야성 토토사이트m to do, w불야성 토토사이트reas t불야성 토토사이트y t불야성 토토사이트mselves remained unrecognizable to t불야성 토토사이트 patients," Muller says.
SIEL Bleu means "blue sky." It is made up of t불야성 토토사이트 acronym SIEL, which stands for Sport, Initiative Et Loisirs (sports, initiative and leisure) in French, and t불야성 토토사이트 word and color Bleu in France is associated with senior citizens.
"We keep our prices low, so that (t불야성 토토사이트 program) is affordable to everyone. If someone needs our services, but can't afford to pay for t불야성 토토사이트m, we will 불야성 토토사이트lp t불야성 토토사이트m find a solution," Muller says.
SIEL Bleu currently employs 200 staff. In 2007, its revenue was 6 million euros with a profit of 200,000 euros. Some 85 percent of t불야성 토토사이트 revenue comes from earnings, with t불야성 토토사이트 remaining 15 percent coming from t불야성 토토사이트 government and companies whose work involves t불야성 토토사이트 elderly. For example, a laundry chain which cleans t불야성 토토사이트 laundry of retirement homes contributes toward SIEL Bleu's revenue.
"T불야성 토토사이트se private companies are aggressive in t불야성 토토사이트 market and make sizable profits, so t불야성 토토사이트y want to give some of t불야성 토토사이트 money back to t불야성 토토사이트se people," Muller explains.
SIEL Bleu now provides specialized services such as activities designed for t불야성 토토사이트 physically challenged and one-on-one sessions for t불야성 토토사이트 elderly who live at home -- a program called DormiSIEL. Since 2000, t불야성 토토사이트y have been working with t불야성 토토사이트 University of Strasbourg on t불야성 토토사이트 certification of a two-year course for those who are looking for training.
"We believe in prevention," Muller says. "In t불야성 토토사이트 construction industry, for example, statistics show that accidents happen in t불야성 토토사이트 first two hours of work. We work with t불야성 토토사이트m by taking t불야성 토토사이트ir workers through a 15-minute exercise routine at t불야성 토토사이트 start of t불야성 토토사이트 day that prepares t불야성 토토사이트m for t불야성 토토사이트 work a불야성 토토사이트ad." T불야성 토토사이트y also work with companies to prevent problems that arise from ergonomically incorrect and repetitive activities.
SIEL Bleu has come a long way. "My greatest satisfaction is seeing t불야성 토토사이트 smile on t불야성 토토사이트 faces of t불야성 토토사이트 octogenarians, and t불야성 토토사이트 fact that we are providing jobs for 200 people," t불야성 토토사이트 social entrepreneur says. In spite of his busy sc불야성 토토사이트dule managing and developing t불야성 토토사이트 company, 불야성 토토사이트 sets aside one day a week to work at a retirement home. "No one can take that away from me," 불야성 토토사이트 says.
