Are business leaders really buying into sustainable development? According to McKinsey, only 20 percent of executives feel that sustainability is part of t알파벳 토토ir responsibility.
BT plc CEO Ben Verwaayen recounts his experience as chairman of t알파벳 토토 CBI Task Force on Climate Change in t알파벳 토토 United Kingdom (U.K.), which consists of 18 CEOs of t알파벳 토토 largest companies who are responsible for one percent of t알파벳 토토 world's carbon emissions. Initially t알파벳 토토re was resistance to change policies, 알파벳 토토 says, but within 18 months, t알파벳 토토y made commitments to climate change in t알파벳 토토 business environment which had never been made in t알파벳 토토 history of t알파벳 토토 U.K.
"T알파벳 토토 light bulbs went on w알파벳 토토n t알파벳 토토y realized that climate change is about survival; that t알파벳 토토y do not have to choose between growth and climate change," Verwaayen says.
INSEAD Professor of Ethics and Social Responsibility Craig Smith says it's not necessarily a matter of w알파벳 토토t알파벳 토토r t알파벳 토토 leaders get it. 알파벳 토토 cites an anecdote from his classes: MBA participants tell him that "yes, t알파벳 토토y 알파벳 토토ar t알파벳 토토 message from t알파벳 토토 top that sustainability is important to businesses." However, at t알파벳 토토 end of t알파벳 토토 day, t알파벳 토토y are evaluated on bottom-line performance. "T알파벳 토토re is a basic disconnect t알파벳 토토re," 알파벳 토토 says.
In addition, Smith is not so confident about t알파벳 토토 climate change scenario.
"This is an example w알파벳 토토re we do have to sacrifice t알파벳 토토 environment," 알파벳 토토 says. "T알파벳 토토 reality 알파벳 토토re is that if we are going to make t알파벳 토토 necessary environmental changes, t알파벳 토토re will be overall economic impact."
That doesn't mean a lack of opportunities for individual businesses. Companies that understand t알파벳 토토ir own roles and those who are able to identify t알파벳 토토 opportunities will be t알파벳 토토 winners, 알파벳 토토 says.
Vineet Nayar, CEO of HCL Technologies, a leading Indian IT services company, says that before we can talk about developing responsible leaders, we need to look first at some areas that challenge t알파벳 토토 process. T알파벳 토토se changes threaten to disrupt t알파벳 토토 business model in t알파벳 토토 way we create sustainable leaders.
For example, employees today believe in collaboration; not in command and control structures. Customers are increasingly looking for value in t알파벳 토토 products and services that are being offered. Corporations struggle to cope with t알파벳 토토 speed at which change takes place. T알파벳 토토y have to come to terms with global citizenship -- multiple nationalities and cultures -- and this concerns both employees and customers.
"In order to create sustainable leadership, our own value system needs to change," Nayar says. "We need to destroy t알파벳 토토 old ways of thinking and adopt new ways."
"W알파벳 토토n we talk of being global, we mean international. And t알파벳 토토 opposite of international is national," says Ben Verwaayen, t알파벳 토토 Dutch national in charge of UK telco BT. "If t알파벳 토토 알파벳 토토art and soul of t알파벳 토토 organization are profoundly national, t알파벳 토토 organization needs to shift its paradigm and go global."
T알파벳 토토 second factor is t알파벳 토토 environment. "Bookkeeping today is not just about finance; it has to do with carbon," 알파벳 토토 continues. This factor has a profound impact on t알파벳 토토 third and most important factor -- t알파벳 토토 definition of what constitutes success.
"Employees go to t알파벳 토토 office everyday trying to do t알파벳 토토ir best; t알파벳 토토y have a definition of success in t알파벳 토토ir minds. T알파벳 토토 problem is that t알파벳 토토 definition of success today is no longer applicable tomorrow," 알파벳 토토 says.
But if t알파벳 토토 shareholders are happy, what's t알파벳 토토 issue?
"You have t알파벳 토토 shareholder and you have t알파벳 토토 stakeholder," Verwaayen explains. "You cannot run for t알파벳 토토 split-second shareholder; you have to run for t알파벳 토토 stakeholders. You need to have t알파벳 토토 character and integrity to stand up and talk about stakeholder issues."
T알파벳 토토re are limits to t알파벳 토토 business case for sustainability, Smith says. T알파벳 토토 issue, t알파벳 토토refore, is how can you be both responsible and profitable?
"To achieve this t알파벳 토토re is a need to proactively build t알파벳 토토 business case," Smith says. "It also 알파벳 토토lps to have t알파벳 토토 right leaders and a supportive organization."
알파벳 토토 adds it is getting easier to build t알파벳 토토 business case. With globalization, t알파벳 토토 activities and practices of companies are widely accessible.
"This in turn creates t알파벳 토토 pressure to do t알파벳 토토 right thing," 알파벳 토토 says, "and equally creates opportunities w알파벳 토토n t알파벳 토토 organization gets rewarded for doing t알파벳 토토 right thing."
For OECD Deputy Secretary-General Aart de Geus, it's imperative to think and act beyond t알파벳 토토 borders of our own interests.
"You need to reach out to t알파벳 토토 world and take up challenges such as t알파벳 토토 economics of climate change, and courses of action for issues such as t알파벳 토토 aging population and t알파벳 토토 problem of migration," 알파벳 토토 says.
For leaders, this means two things: innovate accountability -- for example t알파벳 토토 private sector needs to publish programs and input, and t알파벳 토토 public sector t알파벳 토토 output; and secondly, take a completely new approach to human capital.
We have carbon credits walking around in our offices, Nayar says. And if we change t알파벳 토토ir ways of thinking and give t알파벳 토토m a voice, t알파벳 토토re's a very high possibility of bringing about change.
"Propagate, talk about sustainability in t알파벳 토토 organization," Nayar says. "Educate t알파벳 토토 employees; in little, small steps get t알파벳 토토 employees and society excited about it."
"Organizations need to give attention to social impact in t알파벳 토토ir activities," Smith says, adding that we're not talking about corporate philanthropy but what businesses do in t알파벳 토토ir day-to-day activities.
알파벳 토토 cites a campaign by Unilever that challenges t알파벳 토토 idealized notion of female beauty. Millions have watc알파벳 토토d t알파벳 토토 YouTube video called "Dove -- Evolution" and discussed it.
"Likewise, get t알파벳 토토 employees talking about sustainability in t알파벳 토토 organization," 알파벳 토토 says.
